The Bronco Models 1/35 Cruiser Tank Mk.I / Mk.I CS (A9 / A9CS) – CB35149 recreates one of the most distinctive and historically important British cruiser tanks of the early Second World War. Designed in the late 1930s, the A9 Cruiser Tank Mk.I was Britain’s first true cruiser tank—built for speed, maneuverability, and exploitation roles rather than heavy armor.
Historical Background
The A9 was developed as part of Britain’s evolving armored doctrine, which divided tanks into infantry tanks (heavily armored, slow) and cruiser tanks (fast, lightly armored). The A9 embodied the cruiser concept with:
A top speed of around 25 mph, impressive for its era
A 2‑pounder (40mm) main gun, effective against early‑war armor
Two small machine‑gun turrets flanking the driver, a unique feature soon abandoned in later designs
The A9 first saw combat in France in 1940, where it struggled against German anti‑tank weapons but proved mechanically reliable. It later served extensively in the North African campaign, where its speed and firepower were better suited to desert warfare.
The A9CS (Close Support) variant replaced the 2‑pounder with a 3.7‑inch howitzer, firing smoke and HE rounds to support infantry and other tanks. CS tanks were typically issued to troop leaders to provide tactical flexibility.
Although quickly superseded by later cruiser tanks like the A10, A13, and eventually the Crusader, the A9 played a crucial role in Britain’s early‑war armored development and battlefield experience.
