The Bronco Models 1/35 Cruiser Tank Mk.IIA / IIA CS A10 (Balkans Campaign) – CB35151 offers modelers a highly detailed representation of one of Britain’s key early‑war cruiser tanks during one of the most challenging Allied operations of WWII. The A10 Cruiser Tank Mk.IIA was an evolution of the earlier A9, featuring thicker armor and simplified construction while retaining the mobility expected of a cruiser tank.
Historical Background
The A10 saw action in several early‑war theaters, but its role in the 1941 Balkans Campaign is particularly notable. As German forces launched rapid offensives into Greece and Yugoslavia, British and Commonwealth units—including the 1st Armoured Brigade—were deployed to support Greek forces and delay the German advance.
Key historical notes:
A10 Mk.IIA and Mk.IIA CS tanks were among the few British armored vehicles available during the campaign.
The mountainous terrain and poor roads of Greece were extremely challenging for armored operations.
Despite being outmatched by German armor and anti‑tank weapons, A10 crews fought stubborn delaying actions.
The Close Support (CS) variant, armed with a 3.7‑inch howitzer, provided smoke and HE support to cover withdrawals and defensive positions.
Many A10s were lost during the retreat to the Peloponnese, with surviving crews evacuated to Crete or Egypt.
The Balkans Campaign highlighted both the bravery of British armored crews and the limitations of early cruiser tank designs. This makes the A10 Mk.IIA a historically rich and visually distinctive subject for modelers.
