The Pz.Kpfw. IV Ausf. The F2 — essentially an F1 hull fitted with the new long gun — appeared in time for the summer offensives of 1942 and provided a decisive tactical advantage until the Soviets introduced their own upgunned vehicles. The Ausf. G continued and refined this formula, introducing thicker frontal armor, Schürzen side skirts on later vehicles, and various production improvements.
