The T-34-85 as produced by Zavod (Factory) No.112 — the Krasnoye Sormovo shipyard in Gorky — represents a pivotal chapter in the development of the most important tank of the Second World War. Factory 112's early T-34-85 production featured distinctive characteristics that differentiated these vehicles from later Ural and STZ-produced examples. By the summer of 1944, the T-34-85 had replaced the T-34/76 as the backbone of Soviet armored power, forming the spearhead of Operation Bagration — the massive Soviet summer offensive that destroyed Army Group Centre and proved to be the largest operation of the entire war.
