1/35 Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär Mid Version - Airfix A1376

The Airfix A1376 1/35 Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär Mid Version is a premium 1/35 scale plastic model kit from Airfix, the UK's oldest and most iconic model kit manufacturer, established in 1952.

The Sturmpanzer IV — popularly known as the Brummbär (grumbling bear), though this was an Allied reporting name rather than an official German designation — was a formidable German assault gun developed to support infantry in close combat against heavily fortified urban positions. Built on the reliable Panzer IV chassis, the Sturmpanzer mounted a short-barreled 15cm StuH 43 L/12 howitzer in a massive, heavily armored superstructure with 100mm of frontal armor capable of withstanding most Soviet anti-tank weapons at combat ranges. The 15cm weapon could demolish fortified buildings and bunkers with a single round, making the Sturmpanzer invaluable in the urban and semi-urban fighting that characterized the later stages of the war. Only 306 Sturmpanzer IVs were produced across four variants, serving with four dedicated Sturmpanzer-Abteilungen (assault battalions). The Mid Version — the third production series — incorporated significant improvements including a redesigned driver's vision port, modified gun mantlet, repositioned periscopes, and Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine paste on most vehicles. Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 216 was the first unit committed to combat with the vehicle at Kursk in July 1943, and both the 216 and 217 Abteilungen saw action in Italy and Normandy respectively in 1944. The Airfix A1376 features over 546 parts and includes photo-etched parts for the engine grilles and detail fittings.
