The Panzerkampfwagen III Befehlswagen (command tank) Ausf.K was the principal armored command vehicle of German Panzer formations from 1942 onwards. Based on the Ausf.J hull, the Befehlswagen K mounted a dummy or reduced-capacity main gun to accommodate the additional radio equipment — typically a Fu 5 and Fu 8 combination — required for battalion and regimental command functions. The Ausf.K introduced the cupola from the Panzer IV and other detail improvements. Schürzen (armor skirts) were fitted to protect the running gear and lower hull sides from Soviet anti-tank rifle fire, which was capable of penetrating the thinner side armor.
