The S-mine (Schrapnellmine) earned the Allied nickname "Bouncing Betty" for its two-stage detonation: a small propelling charge launched the mine roughly a meter into the air before its main charge detonated, scattering shrapnel outward. Widely feared by Allied infantry, it was one of the most notorious anti-personnel mines of the Second World War.
