Designed as a counter to Japanese 'super-cruisers,' the Alaska class represented a unique intermediate type between heavy cruisers and battleships. Guam commissioned in September 1944 and served in the Pacific, providing carrier escort and participating in shore bombardment operations through the end of the war.
