1. Puncture the decal to release trapped air
Silvering happens because air is trapped under the decal
film. You can release that air with tiny perforations.
How to do it:
- Use a new
hobby blade, sewing needle, or pin vise
- Make micro‑holes
in the silvered area (don’t slice the decal)
- Apply Ultra
Decal-Fix over the decal
- Let it
soften and settle as it dries
Why it works: The softening solution flows into the holes
and replaces the trapped air.
2. Flood the area with strong decal softener
If the decal is thick or old, it may need more aggressive
chemistry.
Try:
- Ultra
Decal-Fix AMMO by Mig Jimenez (red label)
- Micro
Sol (red label)
- Mr.
Mark Softer
- Solvaset
(very strong—use sparingly)
Steps:
- Brush
the softener over the silvered area
- Let it
wrinkle (normal)
- Do not
touch it
- Allow
it to dry completely
Often, the silvering disappears as the decal tightens down.
3. Inject gloss varnish under the decal (This
is the “pro‑level rescue” technique.)
You’ll need:
- A fine
needle
- Gloss
clear (acrylic or lacquer)
- A
steady hand
Steps:
- Poke a
tiny hole in the silvered area
- Use
the needle to place a drop of gloss under the decal
- Press
gently with a cotton swab to spread it
- Let
dry
The gloss fills the air pockets and restores clarity.
4. Apply a localized gloss coat over the decal
If the silvering is mild, a gloss coat can visually “fill”
the texture.
Steps:
- Brush
or airbrush gloss varnish over the decal
- Let it
level and dry
- Apply
your final matte/satin coat
This won’t fix severe silvering but works well for light
cases.
5. Use oil or enamel washes to hide remaining silvering
If the silvering is only in panel lines or edges, you can
disguise it.
Use:
Steps:
- Apply
wash around the decal
- Let
capillary action darken the edges
- Clean
excess
This reduces contrast and hides the frosty look.
Why Silvering Happens
- Matt
or satin
paint under the decal
- Rough
surface texture
- Air
trapped during application
- Old or
thick decals
- Not
enough Micro Set/Sol
- Dust
under the decal
A gloss
coat before decals is the best prevention.
