The M4A3(76)W Sherman — the Ford V8-powered hull fitted with the T23 turret mounting the 76mm M1A1 or M1A2 gun and the wet (W) ammunition stowage — was the most capable production Sherman variant of the war. The 76mm gun gave a significant improvement over the original 75mm in anti-armor performance, and the wet stowage system dramatically reduced the risk of ammunition fires that had earned the Sherman its grim nickname 'Ronson' among crews.
