Fall of France 1940

May 1940. Western Europe under attack.

In May 1940, Germany launched its campaign in Western Europe, invading France, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands.

The attack moved fast. German forces used speed, surprise, armor, aircraft, and coordinated movement to break through Allied defenses. While much of the Allied attention was drawn toward Belgium, German armored units pushed through the Ardennes — terrain many believed would be difficult for a major armored advance.

That breakthrough changed the campaign.

German forces crossed the Meuse River, split Allied lines, and drove toward the English Channel. Within weeks, the situation in Western Europe had shifted dramatically. Allied armies were forced into retreat, Belgium and Luxembourg were overrun, and France faced a rapidly collapsing front.

May 1940 became one of the most important moments of WWII because it showed how quickly modern warfare could change the battlefield.

For modelers, this campaign offers powerful build inspiration: early-war German armor, French and British vehicles, road columns, retreat scenes, bridge crossings, destroyed villages, field guns, infantry movement, and the confusion of a fast-moving campaign.

Build the breakthrough. Build the retreat. Build the opening shock of the war in the West.
