After years of fighting across the desert, the North African Campaign reached its conclusion in May 1943.
Axis forces had been pushed west through Libya and into Tunisia, where German and Italian troops made their final stand against Allied pressure from multiple directions. British and Commonwealth forces advanced from the east, while American and other Allied forces pushed from the west after Operation Torch.
By May, the Axis position in Tunisia had collapsed. Large numbers of German and Italian troops surrendered, ending the campaign in North Africa and giving the Allies control of the southern Mediterranean.
The victory was a major turning point. It opened the door for the invasion of Sicily, pushed the Axis out of Africa, and gave Allied forces valuable experience in combined arms warfare.
For modelers, the final phase of the North African Campaign offers plenty of build inspiration: dusty armor, exhausted infantry, desert-worn vehicles, supply columns, field guns, sandbagged positions, and the transition from open desert fighting to the rugged terrain of Tunisia.
